May 2006 - Take medicine - Angola-Cholera

Read the free e-book!

***************************************************************
Isn't it important to be precise? The spread of an epidemic may depend on a single person somewhere in the world to understand precisely what to do with a particular medicine! Here are some languages tools towards the goal of communicating with more than gestures. Obviously it's too much to ask me to add more and more language wordings without help for the internet community.
A misunderstanding story at the end of the page.
Now--how to communicate about frequency of taking medicines in any translated Bible language for the sick person, the medical staff and the friends and relatives.

***************************************************************
The pattern:
Take/swallow 2 aspirins a day, one in the morning, one in the evening for 10 days.
(For: "Come back in _____ days." (To see how the person is doing--for a new or updated prescription or none at all) see the free e-book)
(For vaccination wordings see the free e-book)
***************************************************************
For disease prevention within whole communities:
(All of you) swallow ______.
Avalez ______. French
Schluckt ________. - German
Inghiottite _______. - Italian
Tragáis ________. - Spanish
(There are many references about swallowing. None in command form. The best is in Matthew 23:23. Any word found has to be improved by a bilinguaal or "native" speaker.)

Adaption for instructions for a single person:
Swallow ________.
Avale ______. - French
Schlucke _______. - German
Inghiotte ________. Italian (confirm)
Tragas _______. Spanish (confirm)
***************************************************************
In the Bible there are references for:
The numbers of pills to take each time:
(the Bible references exist!)
Half
1
2
***************************************************************
one time/once - ?
two times/2nd time - Genesis 8:10
three times/3 times - Genesis 8:12
etc./n+1 times/once again - Genesis 8:21

***************************************************************
Obviously the needed times of day have to be chosen.
in the morning
- Exodus 16:7; 29:39; Jeremiah 20:16; Matt. 16:3
's morgens - Dutch
le matin - French
am Morgen - German
al mattino - Italian
de manhã - Portuguese
por la mañana - Spanish

at noon - Gen 43:16; 43:25 +
's middags - Dutch
à midi - French
mittags -German
a mezzogiorno - Italian
ao meio-dia - Portuguese
a mediodía - Spanish

at about three in the afternoon
- Acts 10:3, 30 +
om ongeveer drie uur 's middags - Dutch
à trois heures de l'après-midi - French
gegen drei Uhr nachmittags - German
verso le tre del pomeriggio - Italian
mais ou menos às três horas da tarde -Portuguese
alrededor de las tres de la tarde - Spanish

in the evening
- Esther 2:14; Mark 13:35 +
's avonds - Dutch
le soir - French
am Abend - German
alla sera - Italian
à tarde - Portuguese
al atardecer - Spanish

in the night
– Psalms 77:6; 119:55; Job 5:14; 1 Thess. 5:2
's nachts - Dutch
dans la nuit - French
in der Nacht - German
la notte - Italian
de noite - Portuguese
por la noche; de noche - Spanish
***************************************************************
There are numbers for almost everything in the Bible.
for the number of days (to take the medicine):

for the number of weeks (to take the medicine):

for the number of months (to take the medicine):
***************************************************************
An almost 2-week time regime for diagnosis of a disease or what medicine to take on each of the days.

on the first day Numbers 7:12
on the second day Numbers 7:18
on the third day Numbers 7:24
on the fourth day Numbers 7:30
on the fifth day Numbers 7:36
on the sixth day Numbers 7:42
(day of rest could be added)
on the seventh day Numbers 7:48
on the eighth day Numbers 7:54
on the ninth day Numbers 7:60
on the tenth day Numbers 7:66
on the eleventh day Numbers 7:72
on the twelfth day Numbers 7:78
(day of rest could be added)
***************************************************************
A misunderstanding story:

In the 1960s a teenager held up a single pill and told my husband that he was protected against his girlfriend getting pregnant.

Still a fairly benign misunderstanding, as the result could have been a child and not an epidemic for everybody.

Goes to prove we need to be even more precise cross-culturally and across languages with medicine instructions.
***************************************************************
For preliterate or illiterate people relevant understandable pictures, a literate person of the language or bilingual people of the needed languages can help.
***************************************************************
A prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Messiah, give knowledge and wisdom to those who need it for the containment and prevention of nuisance and horrible diseases. We pray about medicines and the usage instructions particularly this day. Amen
***************************************************************
This month Angola is experiencing many cases of Cholera, a dysentery illness, where the body can not use the food that was eaten. The food is just passed through. Cholera is caused by cholera bacteria, found in sewage contaminated water.

The free e-book has the word dysentery in a few languages and the Bible reference where this word is found.

Help us find the words needed for many of Angola's languages of the word "dysentery" and some words of practical advice.

The Angolan Soccer team is playing in Germany for THE CUP and visiting the historic city of Celle. Go Anglola!!!
***
As for rendering Cholera as Bible syllables:

CO/KO/ChO - should be in Co-lossians and Co-rinthians
LE - should be in LE-vi and LE-muel
RA - should be in RA-hab, RA(b)-bi and RA-ca

Please look up the Bible references, if you need this word in other languages.
***

A prayer:
Lord, most compassionate Jesus, you who wept openly, we put before you those suffering from cholera or who are in danger of catching this illness and all their communities. We put before you those already suffering, those who are weak and those with other chronic illnesses.
Thank you for your loving care. Amen
