Naming a New Disease
Naming New Diseases

Naming anything for the whole world has its benefits and pitfalls.

My recommendation:
Name new diseases with "Bible syllables".

The greatest PRO for this method:

Because
1) All names and place-names, including Bible ones, are made of syllables
2) names and place-names have original pronunciations in the source Bible texts,
3) the Bible has been translated into the most languages, not just the most common ones,
4) many languages do not like consonant blends, such as gr, st, etc., but all have "easy" syllables such as "na".
and
5) The syllables are rendered in the proper language scripts in the translations.

we have the opportunity to name any and all new diseases with combinations of "easy" Bible name syllables (like "ma") or whole names.

Two Internaional Naming Stories:

One Positive:
Esso wanted to keep its brand name recognizable but still wanted to rename itself internationally. The company wanted to avoid swear words and unwanted meanings anywhere. Their solution? A similar name with 2 x letters. Reasoning? No language has any word with 2 x letters. It seems to have worked!

One Negative:
The NOVA car had trouble in Spanish speaking countries. NO VA means No go!

**************************************************************
How have diseases been named so far:

A) Often new names are made up, since no Latin or any local language name exist: for example SARS from the first letters of a long description. AIDS is like that too. Only thing is: The letters are different in various languages because the long description is different. SIDA is AIDS in French and Italian!

B) Names can come from local languages and are used internationally: example: Beriberi, the thyamine deficiency illness. Beriberi is a good word for almost everyone. Short CV (Consonant-Vowel) syllables! The only drawback is the R sound.

C) Often illnesses are old and have Latin names and local names: example: Rubella

Like Latin:
Рубеола - Bulgarian
Rubella - English

Local language names:
Röteln - German
German measles - English
Краснуха - Russian

(Internationally doctors should understand Latin RUBELLA, since they are taught and use English and Latin names in medical textbooks.

We can find the Bible syllables "retroactively"!
RU as in RU-ben or RU-fus
BE as in BE-rea
LA as in LA-ban, LA-odicea etc.

This is especially helpful for other script languages such as Chinese and Gujarati. Yes. It works for Chinese!)

D) Some diseases are called by the "finder" or "describer"
of the illness. Example: Alzheimer's
Internationally this is a horrible name. The German z pronounced like ts often is a sleepy zzzzz.

My vote for "new" disease names
goes for
those that are short, pronouncable and "easier" to find.

**************************************************************
A) naming with whole Bible names

A1) Trachonitis sounds like a disease already!
This place name is found in Luke 3:1

Positives:
It's "easier to find" - It's in the New Testament in the 1st verse of a chapter.

Drawbacks:
a) some people have this family name
b) it's soooo long
c) everyone may assume this is a word/disease related to the "trachea", the windpipe - I guess this word would be perfect for a disease of the trachea!

A2)
We could name 5 new diseases (related diseases could certainly qualify)
Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,

For ease of naming, there's this list in 1 Chronicles 1:30. The first three are repeated in Genesis 5:14 and the last two are repeated in Genesis 5:15 at the beginning:

Pros:
There are no extra words in the verse. It's a list of 5 names!
The names have 2 common syllables and are short!
The names are in basic form, they should not have any extra grammar endings in many languages.
-the vowels are common i-a-u
-the consonants are common m-d-s-h-t. (Sh is not so common)

Cons:
- The complete list is only found in the Old Testament. There are less translations available than for the New T.
- Hadad and Haddad are first and family names today
- the Duma is the name of the Russian parliament
- Massa may mean "Master" in the language of slaves

A3) Blasto- is a medical prefix from Greek meaning bud, germ, sprout.
It is found in Blasto-mycosis, a fungal lung infection.

Perhaps a nerve, cancer or any budding growth illness could have:

Blastus from Acts 12:20 within its new name.
Власта (Blasta) - Russian
Blasto - Swahili

(Blastus was a trusted personal servant of King Herod (Agrippa I). Perhaps an occupational illness with some type of bud/germ problem could be named with the Bible servant's name)

Pros:
- the name has an established medical meaning
- Simple syllables can be added: examples:
Blasto-pa
Blasto-muna
Blasto-dodo

Cons:
The name is harder to find in a long verse with six puncutation marks in the two versions I checked.
**************************************************************
B) We can name an illess of where it manifests in the body:

Illness of + (the) (part(s) of the body)

See the book "Health Words in the Word" for the labels of a body that you could add.

Pros:
- body part can be shown on a chart
- phrase is predictable

Cons:
- the illness description may be too generic
- the wording "illness of" has to be found in the Bible as well
- in many languages the illness has to be put into the genitive case, and is not left in basic or dictionary form
**************************************************************
C) Names can be made up of "easy" generic syllables:

Examples:
Ro-pa
Ma-na; Ma-pa-na
Pa-ma-na(ha)
Sa-ti-ma
A-ta-xi-na (x - is a Greek letter)

You can use your imagination!!!
These "easy" syllables are bound to be represented in the Bible!
**************************************************************
If you have to name anything, including illnesses, please be respectful and check as much as possible before you insult anyone.

**************************************************************
Dear Lord, God of Gods,

Help us name whatever we need to name: children, families at marriage, companies, "new" never described life forms, and illnesses too. Give us the words and do not fail us in describing what we need to describe quickly. Help especially those who need to do this internationally to make better lives for everyone. To you the glory!

Amen
